@thejessiekirk handbreak seems to focus on video but I also have raw files of a pulp fiction DVD so I'll definitely look into it.

So far the plan is to setup beets, it does have a plugin to do conversion (it's a ffmpeg wrapper) and its job is to fill in metadata.
