I bought a thing[1] yesterday and now it's out of stock. I guess I bought the last one

One thing I'm wondering. It's square wave oscilattor. The sound is a bit harsh. I'm curious if the LM386 amp in a DIP-8 package could be replaced with a chip in the same package, doing the same amp job but also acting like a guitar pedal, altering the sound, cut some corner on these square wave.
